Clapham Common with its lush green spaces, independent shops and cafes attracts families, who head to the area for the charming period properties on offer.

Where is Clapham?

Clapham is located in South West London and is divided into four sections: Clapham North, Clapham South, Clapham Common and Clapham Junction. It’s mostly located in the London Borough of Lambeth, though the Common falls under Wandsworth. Brixton, Streatham and Wandsworth are its neighbouring areas.

A brief history of Clapham

The Clapham family initially owned Clapham after King Edgar of England gave a grant of land to Jonas “de Clapham. The family remained in possession of the land until Jonas’s great-great-grandson sided against William the Conqueror during the Norman invasion of 1066. 

Fast-forward to the late 17th century, and Clapham became a place where the affluent went to build large country houses. In the 18th century, the area became home to the Clapham Sect, a group of people who campaigned for the abolition of slavery. 

Their efforts are still recognised to this day. Many of Clapham’s streets celebrate the historic achievements of the Clapham Sect, who also founded Church Missionary Society and fought for penal reform.

Wandsworth Road and Clapham High Street provide stops on the Overground Line, while Clapham Junction is one of London’s larger train stations with services in and out of the capital. All stations are located in Zone 2.

In 2012, Lambeth Council pedestrianised Venn Street. The result was an area that was completely gentrified with markets and traders selling everything from farm produce to fresh fish. Venn Street Market has helped to bring the community together while supporting local businesses and traders.

Based in Clapham South, Studio Voltaire is a non-profit gallery and art studio. It primarily focuses on contemporary arts and stages a public programme of exhibitions, performances and live events that focuses on unearthing new artists.
