The city can be found on the edge of the River Hull. The postcode for the area is HU1.
A brief history of Hull
While commonly known as Hull, the city actually has a much grander full name: Kingston-Upon-Hull. The reason for this impressive title is that, in 1299, King Edward I bestowed a royal charter upon Hull.
Thanks to its strategic position where the River Hull meets the River Humber, Hull has always flourished as a port, exporting goods such as grain and lead, and importing from Holland, Sweden and Norway. Today, timber and oil seed continue to be major imports in Hull.
During the English Civil War, Hull was a major site of conflict, with lots of military attention from both sides. Because the residents of Hull were on the Parliamentarian side of the conflict, the city was besieged by the Royalists during September and October 1643.
In the 1920s, Hull University was established; the well-known poet Philip Larkin was a librarian there from 1955 to 1985.
