Where is Milton Keynes?

This large town is situated in Buckinghamshire, around 50 miles north-west of London.

A brief history of Milton Keynes

Before any large scale urban development took place in this area, Bletchley Park, a former British government establishment, was set up to decipher codes during World War II. This was where Alan Turing, together with his colleagues, worked on decoding the enemy’s messages. Then, in the 1960s, Milton Keynes was established as a result of the UK government wanting to relieve London’s housing congestion. They had decided to found this new town where a village with the same name already existed.

The town’s plans were based on the idea of a Garden City – a residential community surrounded by greenbelts and areas of industry and agriculture. To a certain extent, these ideas are reflected in what you see today, as 25% of the urban area is  parkland or woodland.

One should maybe also add that even before all of these new developments, our great ancestors inhabited this area, as during the archaeological investigation of Milton Keynes Neolithic and gold jewellery from the Bronze Age were unearthed.
