Now described as a ‘hipster haven’, Tottenham is in the throes of gentrification, with renovation at the top of its priority list. The area is home to a diverse range of people, and despite the undergoing changes, many of the properties remain pretty classic – think Victorian townhouse style. If you’re looking for somewhere with a bustling centre and a cool vibe, Tottenham may be just the area for you.

Where is Tottenham?

You can find Tottenham in Zone 3 within the borough of Haringey. Its neighbours include Edmonton, Wood Green, Walthamstow, Harringay and Stamford Hill. If you want to get to central London, it’ll take you around 25 minutes. The postcode for the area is N17.

A brief history of Tottenham

Tottenham was first recorded as ‘Toteham’ in the Domesday book, alongside a weir that was found in the area now known as Tottenham Hale. Even in the 12th century, the accessibility of Tottenham was attractive, especially to wealthy merchants and a range of religious institutions. Henry VIII visited Tottenham in 1517 and made a large payment to the hermitage of the area. This was a catalyst in the development of mansions and private schools that were then built over the next 200 years.

Of course, you can’t think about Tottenham without mentioning their football club, the Tottenham Hotspurs. In the early 20th century, the club began to win trophies and attracted people and industry to the area. With these developments, the last of the farmland in this area disappeared during the 1920s.
