Alternative to OpenRent
(and other online letting agents)
The increasing number of letting agents, both online and on the high street, means landlords have never had more options. But it can be confusing knowing who to list your property with – which one do you choose? Mashroom is a free rental platform that provides an alternative to OpenRent and other letting agents. And we’ve put this handy comparison guide together, detailing what separates Mashroom from OpenRent.
Mashroom is a free online lettings platform where landlords can list, reference and manage their rental property. Unlike other agents, we provide free 30-day advertising on property portals Rightmove and Zoopla, giving our landlords access to millions of renters.
When it comes to managing your rental, a personalised online dashboard means you have access to everything you need in one place. Keep track of viewings, access documents and resolve maintenance issues with just a few clicks.
Unlike other letting agents, such as OpenRent, Mashroom covers every aspect of letting your property. This includes extra features like free buy-to-let mortgage advice and direct access to thousands of qualified tradespeople. Mashroom provides a comprehensive service with everything you need under one roof.

Mashroom vs. OpenRent
Mashroom offers an Intercom chat service with replies in under five minutes. Landlords also benefit from a free 10-minute consultation, where our lettings expert walks you through the platform and answers any questions you may have.
OpenRent has a chat service, with response times of 24 hours. However, there isn’t any form of consultation service for landlords, with OpenRent instead opting for a Help Centre. The Help Centre offers general advice on renting.
Mashroom vs. OpenRent
Both Mashroom and OpenRent have a current score of 4.8/5 in FeeFo. Mashroom reviews highlight the transparency offered to landlords on the platform, plus the fast response times and how easy everything is to navigate. Currently, all reviews for Mashroom are four stars and above.
OpenRent also has positive reviews, with people highlighting its speed and the low costs often praised by those who have used the platform. Some criticisms have included slow response times and delays in properties going live.
Mashroom vs. OpenRent
Using Mashroom, landlords can take advantage of 30 days of free advertising across the UK’s major property portals, Rightmove and Zoopla. Other benefits include holding deposit processing, as well as contract drafting and e-sign – all completely free.
OpenRent offers the same features – holding deposit processing, contract and e-sign – for a one-off fee of £49. Both companies provide tenant referencing as a handy extra, though Mashroom’s version is £5 cheaper (£15) compared to OpenRent (£20).Mashroom v OpenRent prices
Mashroom also offers extra cover for landlords in the form of a deposit replacement scheme, which gives you 12 weeks’ worth of security. It’s free for landlords, with tenants paying a small fee which is still considerably cheaper than the traditional five-week deposit.
Maintenance requests through the Mashroom platform mean you can resolve repair issues with ease. Tap into our bank of 7,000-plus contractors – who are backed by British Gas – by assigning jobs to them in the platform.
If you’re thinking of buying a new investment property, our free buy-to-let mortgage advice will help you build on your portfolio. Get access to over 90 lenders and more than 12,000 mortgage products without paying any broker fees.
Finally, landlords using Mashroom can work with their outgoing tenant to reduce void periods. Tenant Team Up sees your outgoing tenant host viewings on your behalf in exchange for one week’s worth of rent. It means you can rent out your property faster and reduce the amount of time it sits empty.
Mashroom and OpenRent for tenants
Mashroom is a free platform for tenants as well as landlords. Tenants can also earn money (a week’s worth of rent) when they work with their landlord and host viewings with the Tenant Team Up feature. As a host, the outgoing tenants show new renters around the home.
During the in-life tenancy, an interactive dashboard helps tenants keep all their documents in one place, raise maintenance requests and chat to their landlords directly through the messaging feature. Tenants can also refer a landlord to Mashroom, and they will receive a £20 Amazon gift card as a “thank you”.
OpenRent is free for tenants to use. However, it does not offer tenants the opportunity to make money through hosting viewings, nor does it provide tenants with a reward for referrals. Although you can access all online documents in the dashboard, OpenRent does not have a maintenance feature.
